"I couldn't just stop here, I couldn't bear the pain of having a regret - Rewind"

Without the accompaniment of a bunch of crazy comrades in the past years, she would not be someone as how she is today. In the year of 2011, Ee Theng uprooted George Town, Penang and travelled to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah to pursue her studies. She never thought that there would be so much memorable things happened over the three years.

Ee Theng was actively involved in university events since her first year of studies. The first event she participated was the first Chinese Cultural Night at UMS. She was fortunate enough to have her seniors recognized and promoted as the secretary of the program unit. During the preparation of the event, however, she learnt more than secretariat works. She was merely an ordinary committee member but her curiosity leaded her to have a strong grasp on program planning and executing, as well as the arts of performance. Going through ups and downs during the process, she realized the importance of continuing a culture and working as a team. The magnificent closing of the cultural night marked the start point of her journey in this particular field.

In the second year, she took up the role as the associate producer of the second Chinese Cultural Night. Despite of that, she started to write lyrics for the particular musical dance theater in the Chinese Cultural Night. She chose to retreat herself in the coffee house by immersing herself in the words and music during the holiday. She was glad that she was not alone during those sleepless nights. The whole team worked restlessly in order to produce the best original artworks. She said that her lyrics are not the best but she just stumbled upon the pleasure of writing a lyric. Hence, she began her journey as a lyricist.

The closing of the event did not end the story. The continual passion in her and the team has inspired and triggered the formation of a creative platform in UMS. They dreamt to create a stage for those having the same passion and talent. After months of efforts, the team managed to accomplish their first ever official performance during the Night of Mid-Autumn Festival in UMS. She said she was so thrilled and moved when the host pronounced ‘Incubator Workshop’ on the stage. At that moment, she knew Incubator Workshop was no longer just a dream.

Thereof, Ee Theng started to put herself into every detail in Incubator Workshop. Her presence and involvement could be ranged from member recruitment, original production to team management. The turn-over of members and performances did not cease her persistence in retaining the originality of the production. She told me that there are abundant of people she needs to convey her heartfelt gratitude. Every compliment, encouragement or criticism was what driving her to move on. She treasures and appreciates those friends who recklessly traveled along the journey of uncertainty with her. With the foundation at UMS, she believes that the beauty of the arts would be their core of unity no matter where they would be. She added that she is not a born dreamer. She felt regretful for not establishing Incubator Workshop as earlier as to gather more passionate peers.

Having no dream, perhaps, is the start point of dreaming on. Plot it with ideas, excite it with your passion, and pursue it by continually dreaming!

Epilogue: The interview with Ee Theng has brought me a mindful of memories. I could vaguely recall that the booklet I took from the 2nd Chinese Cultural Night has her name sandwiched in accordance to a number of lyrics. The name was appealing to me and I started scan the lyrics and their meanings. I remembered I was quietly sitting at the audience seat.  The lighting was dim and yet the words were so catchy. At the moment when I met her, only I found that she is much more dazzling than I used to think of.
